El Paso Times: Paso del Norte Group backs all 3 ballot issues

The Paso del Norte Group has announced its support for the three propositions in the November quality-of-life bond referendum, including the $473 million in projects and the proposed hotel occupancy tax increase to support the construction of a Downtown ballpark. The group of influential business and civic leaders unanimously voted to support the propositions during a recent membership meeting attended by more than 100 people, the group said.

Despite debate from various political, public and media sectors, plans continue for a new baseball stadiumin downtown El Paso at the site of the current city hall. The first pitch for Triple-A level baseball would be in 2014.
Alan Ledford, founder and CEO of Perfect Game Ventures,serves as a consultant for the project and the local ownership team, MountainStar Sports Group. His background features nine years as president, chief operating officer and general manager of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, the Oakland A’s top farm team in the Pacific Coast League.

The Future of the Paso del Norte Region
Progress in Ciudad Juarez
Paso del Norte Group Members - - Presentations at our recent Civic and Executive Committee meetings have highlighted the improvements underway in Ciudad Juarez. The City is moving ahead with many important projects that will improve the quality of life for the region. At the same time, crime rates are decreasing and the atmosphere in the city is improving. Two weeks ago I spent the entire day there, driving around Juarez with PDN member, Jesse Melendez, and could feel a much better atmosphere than a year or so ago.
Human capital development for a thriving border
A report done for the Paso del Norte region by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) recommends action by the community to develop a collaborative process; link regional business, industry and educational stakeholders; strive for educational excellence, and foster an environment where entrepreneurs may flourish. This represents a key factor to create the wealth necessary for a sustainable and growing economy.
OECD recommendations and efforts by the Paso del Norte Group’s Education Committee led to a partnership with Manpower International for the development of a supply-and-demand labor analysis and forecast for the region.
Cooperation among the region’s educational institutions, the private sector and governments requires unique and often creative solutions. The talent is here; the roadmap is ready.
